When Arenys de Mar Becomes Demarenys

c77d06340f6623d2ac12a37f2b1df900.jpg

If you've read my novels, you've already wandered through the streets of Demarenys. You've walked along its seafront, stepped inside its historic buildings, and followed detectives through places where everyday life and mystery go hand in hand.

But here's the secret: Demarenys doesn't exist on any map.

Demarenys is the fictional name I give to Arenys de Mar, a charming Mediterranean town on the Catalan coast, just north of Barcelona. While the stories, characters and crimes are fictional, many of the settings are inspired by real streets, squares, beaches and landmarks that you can actually visit.

In this blog, you'll discover the real places behind the novels. Each post explores a location featured in one or more books, revealing its history, its atmosphere and the role it plays in the stories—without spoiling the mysteries.

Whether you've already visited Arenys de Mar or are discovering it for the first time through my books, I hope these pages help you see how reality and fiction blend together to create the world of Demarenys.

Welcome to the town behind the mysteries.

Vila Arenys Hotel

The hotel was created through the reconstruction of a grand 19th-century manor house, blending modern, avant-garde style to become a unique, bespoke boutique hotel.

The spacious, light-filled rooms offer views of Arenys de Mar’s main avenue—home to local shops—as well as the town center.

The hotel stands out for its exceptional dining experience; its restaurant features a menu based on locally sourced ingredients and unique culinary techniques, allowing guests to enjoy exquisite cuisine.

At the very top lies a special spot: the SkyBar. This terrace features a pool where you can enjoy a glass of wine while gazing out at the beautiful rooftops of Arenys de Mar by night.

The outdoor terrace facing the avenue—specifically at the first table you reach upon entering—is where Crisálida Cross has breakfast every morning, and where the first mysterious accident or murder takes place.

Here at the Vila Arenys Hotel is where Cris has breakfast every morning — and where the first mysterious death takes place.

L'Ateneu Arenyenc

L'Ateneu Arenyenc is a non-profit cultural association, officially recognised as a public-benefit organisation and long committed to the people and community of Arenys de Mar.

In mid-September 1884, a group of friends who regularly met at Cafè d'en Flos decided to establish an ateneu—a cultural and civic association dedicated to education, discussion and the promotion of the arts.

They began by organising literary, artistic and scientific gatherings. The following year, in 1885, they laid the foundations of the institution by holding its first literary competition, establishing L'Ateneu Arenyenc as one of the town's leading cultural organisations.

Today, L'Ateneu Arenyenc remains true to its founding principles while embracing a modern, inclusive and open vision. It continues to foster culture, education and intellectual debate, while promoting the arts, sport and community life with a strong commitment to economic, social and environmental responsibility.

Here at L'Ateneu Arenyenc is where Mireia organises the literary gatherings and charity events that bring the community together.

Want to know what role L'Ateneu Arenyenc plays in the story—and what Cris Cross uncovers there? Find out in Murder at the Hotel, Book 1 of the Mysteries of Crisálida Cross series.

Port of Arenys

The Port of Arenys de Mar is a symbol of the town’s rich maritime heritage. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Arenys became an important naval power, with renowned shipyards, a prestigious nautical school, and thriving maritime trade with the Americas.

Today, the port preserves this legacy as the main fishing port in the Maresme region, famous for its fish market and the highly prized Arenys prawns, while also offering a modern marina and a wide range of waterfront restaurants and leisure activities.

Beaches of Arenys de Mar

The beaches of Arenys de Mar combine wide stretches of golden sand with excellent facilities for enjoying the Mediterranean. La Musclera stands out for its naturist area and accessibility, La Picòrdia is the lively urban beach located next to the port, and El Cavaió offers a quieter setting surrounded by cliffs and nature, making it ideal for visitors seeking relaxation.

This is where Cris finds peace. He walks by the sea, listens to the waves and seagulls, breathes in the salty air, watches the boats sail by, and, sitting on his favorite log, gazes out at the horizon.

Bisbe Pol Boulevard

Bisbe Pol Boulevard is the heart of Arenys de Mar and one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. Lined with centuries-old plane trees, it is the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely stroll, relax on a café terrace, and experience the authentic atmosphere of this charming seaside town.

A Walk Through History

Before becoming the pleasant boulevard it is today, the Riera was the natural stream that carried floodwaters from the Maresme hills to the Mediterranean. Over time, it evolved into the town’s main meeting place while preserving its unique character and close connection to the sea.

The Legacy of the Indianos

Elegant mansions built by the Indianos—locals who made their fortunes in the Americas before returning home—line the boulevard. Their ornate façades, wrought-iron balconies, gardens, and Modernist details reflect the prosperity Arenys de Mar enjoyed during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Today, Bisbe Pol Boulevard is the perfect place to discover the essence of Arenys de Mar: a lively promenade where history, architecture, local shops, and Mediterranean charm come together, inviting both residents and visitors to enjoy the town’s relaxed pace of life.

This is where the heart of Arenys beats. Beneath the shade of the old plane trees, Cris stops to greet neighbors, shares a few words, and enjoys the slow rhythm of everyday life.
